The Lenten Journey: Part 6

There is a unique thread between Psalm 118:1-2, 19-29 and Luke 19:28-40 that involves rocks!  In Psalm 118:22, the Psalmist proclaims that the stone rejected by builders is now the cornerstone.  Jesus tells the religious officials in Luke 19:40 after they tell him to silence the shouts of praise in the streets that even the rocks will cry out if the people cease to praise God!

In Psalm 118, the author proclaims of God’s faithful love that lasts forever!  It is a recurring refrain and for good reason.  The Psalmist recounts God’s saving acts.  And yet, people ignored, discredited, and probably tried to silence the author of Psalm 118.  Yet, the Psalmist saw themselves as a stone that was rejected, but God used them to declare of God’s glory throughout the world and to become a main foundation stone!

And the rocks in Luke 19 would proclaim God’s glory, too, if the people weren’t shouting in the streets praising God.  But, that doesn’t take us off the hook to give the LORD the full credit that is due!  Our grateful response to God’s care, love, and protection of us is to shout: “Hosanna!  Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the LORD!  Peace in heaven and glory in the highest heavens!”

Kindred in Christ, that is indeed Good News!  God has done so much for us in the past, is doing so much in the present, and will continue to do so much for us in the future as our friend in Psalm 118 preaches.  Let us shout to the world, like the disciples in the streets in Jerusalem, and share of God’s faithful and loving work in our lives and throughout creation!
