“Healer of Our Every Ill”

Ephesians 5:6-14 is our scripture for this Sunday.

Paul is calling out the converts to Christianity.  Many scholars believe that congregation was mainly Gentile.  So, of course, there are problems.  There is this spiritual conflict facing many, if not all, in that congregation.  Many are living as if they are children of ignorance instead as children of light.  Many are behaving out of greed, impurity, and corruption, just like the Roman Empire.

But, Paul recognizes that the struggle is not a one and done thing.  It is a lifelong and sometimes daily struggle.  These new converts to Christianity have to continually ask for the light of the LORD to shine on them to reveal the things that are Godly and the things that are godless.  Paul is calling on each of them to remember who they are and whose they are:  Christians who are children of the LORD’s light.

This scripture speaks volumes today.  Especially in the situation of COVID-19 when fear and reckless behavior is being exhibited by so many, including Christians.  Yet, we are called to speak peace to the storm and be that non-anxious presence wherever we go.  We are called to live our lives as children of the light, not of ignorance.

As we go forward in these uncertain days, we can rest assured that the Holy Spirit has blazed the trail for us.  In hope, peace, faith, and love, let us live our lives as children of the LORD’s light.

Christ’s Peace,

Pastor T. Wes Moore
